50 small dogs waiting for a new home at Idaho Humane Society

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- Fifty small dogs landed in Boise Thursday afternoon, seeking new homes for the Holidays.

Partnering with an overcrowded animal shelter in Sacramento, California and a non-profit network of pilots, Wings of Rescue, the Idaho Humane Society (IHS) specifically was looking for a large transfer of small dogs because -- surprisingly -- there's a shortage of adoptable small dogs in the area.

"We're just not receiving the number of small dogs into our shelter to adopt that there is the demand for," said Hannah Parpart with the Humane Society. "They're really popular."

The dogs that came to Boise are all small breeds, under 20 pounds, of various breeds and mixes including Terriers ,Pomeranians, Shih Tzus and Chihuahuas.

Many California shelters struggle to find homes for the large number of dogs that arrive at their facilities. And as mentioned, the Idaho Humane Society has a high demand from homes looking to adopt smaller, companion dogs.

Once the new arrivals were on the ground in Boise, IHS staff and veterinarians will immediately begin evaluating the dogs and completing any necessary medical care.

The IHS anticipates some of the new arrivals will be available for adoption at the IHS Main Shelter and the IHS PetSmart Adoption Center as soon as this weekend. The remaining dogs will complete their veterinary care at the Idaho Humane Society Veterinary Medical Center and become available for adoption gradually throughout the week.

The IHS hopes to have all the dogs ready to meet new owners in time for the 12 Strays of Christmas Holiday Adopt-a-thon taking place at the Shelter and Adoption Center on Saturday, December 13. On Saturday for the Holiday Adopt-a-thon, all dog adoptions fees will be reduced by 25% and all cat adoption fees will be only $25.

The Idaho Humane Society's main Shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 7 days a week. The IHS PetSmart Adoption Center is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
