Annual golf tournament honors fallen soldier, and raises money for veterans

John Borbonus proudly served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq in 2007. His family continues to honor him and his heroism with a golf tournament that benefits young adults and veterans.

The beneficiaries of the tournament are always Boise State University men's and women's golf programs, and a veterans program. This year, that was the Idaho Veterans Assistance Program.

Ned Barker, the spokesperson of IVAL said, "We are deeply honored to continue John Borbonus's legacy through this annual golf tournament, it's not just about the game; it's about coming together as a community to support our veterans through commemorating John. We are grateful for the ongoing support from the Borbonus Family Foundation, the Boise Veterans Home, and Boise State University as we work towards our shared mission of giving back to those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom."

The Borbonus Family Foundation is helping to cover the cost of a low-rise bus, that will give veterans who use powered wheelchairs transportation capabilities, to ensure easy access to community events and activities.

Veronique Borbonus, John's cousin, said, "That's why we also wanted to honor them here as a beneficiary of the tournament. And we're gonna get them that bus."

One of the ways they raised money was to auction off professional coach and collegiate athletes.

Veronique said, "This tournament obviously wouldn't happen without a lot of support. A lot of hands."

The Borbonus family says the fun-filled tournament and generosity will keep John's memory alive.

Veronique said, "It's something that we never want to forget. You never want to forget John and I'm here to make sure that that never happens."
