Bill Nye the 'Science Guy' to be honored with star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
LOS ANGELES — Bill Nyethe "Science Guy," who is known for his humor and love for science, is being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Walk of Fame Selection Panel of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced its new class of honorees Monday. The categories for stars include motion pictures, recording, live theatre/live performance, radio, and sports entertainment.
“The Walk of Fame has made history again! As Chairman of the Walk of Fame Selection Committee, I am thrilled to announce the distinguished honorees who will grace the iconic Walk of Fame in the Class of 2025, said Peter Roth, Chairman. “Each honoree truly embodies the essence of excellence in their respective fields.”
Nye will be getting his star in Los Angeles in the TV category along with eight other honorees.
Other individuals selected for this year's class include Prince (posthumous), David Beckham, Keith Urban, Jessica Chastain, Jane Fonda, and Fran Drescher.
Nye kickstarted his career in Seattle after graduating from Cornell University in 1977 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, his website said. He was recruited by Boeing for an engineering position and Nye made the move to the Pacific Northwest.
“I’ve always loved airplanes and flight. There’s a hydraulic resonance suppressor ‘Quinke’ tube on the 747-horizontal stabilizer drive system that I like to think of as my tube,” Nye said on his website.
In Seattle, Nye was able to combine his love for science and comedy after winning a Steve Martin look-alike contest. He was an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night, his website said.
After a few years, Nye quit his engineering job and pursued a career as a comedy writer and performer on Seattle’s comedy show “Almost Live” in 1986. It was through this that his Emmy award-winning show “Bill Nye the Science Guy” was born.
Nye has written eight children’s books, has been featured on the New York Times Bestsellers List, is CEO of the Planetary Society, and is on the board of the Mount St. Helens Institute.
Nye will join a long list of icons with their names on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is visited by millions every year.
An official date for his star ceremony has not been determined.
