Early Life

David Edward Kelley was born in Waterville, Maine in April 1956. His father Jack Kelley is a member of the United States Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. He was raised in Belmont, Massachusetts where he attended Belmont High School. After high school he attended Princeton University where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science. For his senior thesis, he turned the Bill of Rights into a play. Each amendment was a character. After Princeton he earned a Juris Doctor from Boston University Law School. While at Law School he wrote for a legal-themed sketch comedy group called the Legal Follies. After law school he went to work for a Boston law firm where he handled real estate and minor criminal cases.

In 1983, a 27 year old Kelley began writing a legal thriller as a side hobby. He adapted the story into a screenplay which was optioned by film producers and eventually turned into the 1987 Judd Nelson film "From the Hip".

Success

In 1986 producer Steven Bochco was seeking smart young legal writers for a new NBC series he was working on called "L.A. Law". After reading David's From the Hip script, Bochco offered him a staff writing job on the series. David did not quit his legal job initially, worrying that this foray into TV writing wouldn't last.

By the show's second season, David had been promoted to story editor and co-producer. By 1989, he was named executive producer. For his work on L.A. Law Kelley received two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series.

In 1992 Bochco and Kelley co-created "Dougie Houser, M.D.". That same year they co-created David E. Kelley Productions which quickly landed a deal with CBS television.

The first series created by David E. Kelley Productions was "Picket Fences" which aired 88 episodes over four seasons. Picket Fences earned 14 Emmy Awards.

In 1994 he created the CBS series "Chicago Hope" which eventually aired 141 episodes over six seasons.

In 1995, David's deal with CBS ended and he signed a new larger contract with 20th Century Fox. The first two projects under the Fox deal were "The Practice" and "Ally McBeal". The Practice aired 168 episodes over 8 seasons on ABC. Ally McBeal aired 112 episodes over 5 seasons on Fox.

In 2000, he created "Boston Public" which aired 81 episodes over four seasons. In 2004 he created "Boston Legal" which aired 101 episodes over 5 seasons.

David began dating actress Michelle Pfeiffer in January 1993 after being set up on a blind date. Before meeting David, Michelle had begun legal adoption proceedings. Two months into their dating, Michelle adopted newborn girl Claudia Rose. David and Michelle married in November 1993. In August 1994 Michelle gave birth to a son named John Henry.

Real Estate

Michelle and David own a vast and impressive real estate portfolio that spans the globe. For at least a decade they have owned a 340-acre coastal estate in a remote wilderness area of British Columbia. They reportedly spent more than $35 million to acquire the property and build a large cabin retreat. The property is so remote that it does not even have a postal code. It is only accessible by boat. They listed this property for sale in October 2017 for $28 million.

In 2004 and 2008 they spent a total of $20.6 million to acquire two parcels in the San Francisco suburb of Woodside, for a total of 8.7-acres. The property features a 6,300 square-foot home. After listing this property for $29 million in 2018, they finally unloaded it for $22 million in January 2020.

In 2016 they spent $8.15 million on a home in the Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles. In September 2018 they bought the house next door for $7.7 million, for a total of $15.85 million. In January 2020, they sold the first-purchased property for $9.1 million to Texas businessman Jim Crane, owner of the Astros. At the same time the second-purchased home was listed for a price tag of $8.35 million. The price was dropped to $7.3 million a year later.
