No room for that, Ross Brawn rubbishes rumors about double diffuser in 2022 F1 season

Publish date: 2024-07-16

Ahead of the first pre-testing practice session in Barcelona, teams will be looking to exploit multiple grey areas in regulations in order to gain the slightest advantage before the season begins. And one such loophole could see the return of the infamous “Double Diffuser” that Brawn GP had introduced in their swansong year by winning the title in 2009.

With half the grid done with their “digital launches”, teams are secretive about leaking sensitive design data. Ross Brawn who was the founder and CEO of the team and Nikolas Tombazis who designed the title-winning car have since then rubbished the rumors that the fiesty piece of aero tech will make an unlikely return in the 2022 cars.

With new regulations in place that have bought changes in Power units, Aerodynamic, monocoque and tyre size, F1 teams will have to perform a major makeover to make their cars race-ready. The Pre-season testing begins from 23rd to 25th February in Barcelona.

Ross Brown: “You don’t know about silver bullets”

Following Ross Brawn’s buyout of the Honda racing team, Brawn GP shocked everyone by lifting the constructor’s title in their maiden and only year in F1. Jenson Button, who drove for Brawn lifted the Driver’s title. Ross Brawn and Nikolas Tombazis discussed the loopholes that the teams will ahead for to Auto, Motor und Sport

“You don’t know about silver bullets,” said Brawn. “If you knew where the silver bullet was you would have stopped it. There’s no guarantee that something may occur that we just haven’t anticipated. And I think if it is going to occur, you won’t see it in Barcelona [testing]. Probably someone will spring it on F1.”

That year Brawn GP introduced the controversial double diffuser and enjoyed a huge advantage in the early part of the season. ”I can promise you that we have come across many different solutions, but nothing as big as the double diffuser from 2009,” said Tombazis.

Ross Brown currently serves the role of Managing Director, Motor Sports and technical director for the Formula One Group. Tombazis has joined the FIA to become the technical head of single-seater racing.
